Day 18 - A book that disappointed you Neuromancer by William Gibson. I’ve heard a lot about it before I’ve read it. I had read his Idoru befor the Neuromancer, too. So I expected… I don’t know what I expected, really. The book definitelly didn’t give me that. It was quite messy, pointless, even boring. I remember almost nothing of it, just that it had a main male character...

Day 16 - Favorite female character What did I just say about favorite male characters? I’ll list the three books (again) and write my favorite gals (again). Abarat: Candy Quackenbush. Neverwhere: Lady Door. Discworld: Susan Sto Helit. It’s more difficult to say why I love certain female characters than male ones. I guess I just like how they act, how they talk, their reactions to...

Day 15 - Favorite male character I don’t really have the one favorite character… I usually pick one fave from the book I just read, but don’t fangirl over him much after I finish it. So let’s do this other way round - I’ll list three books and say which male characters i liked there: Abarat: Malingo. Because he started as a looser and is on a good way to become...

Day 14 - Favorite book of your favorite writer Neverwhere. The characters are memorable and relatable, the story is fast paced and well-built - and the world is just awesome. :D And anyway, for me it’s connected with a great times in my life so it sure will stay one of my most loved books from them all. Meme list here.

Day 13 - Your favorite writer Neil Gaiman. You can bet that anything he writes, it will be at least moderately good. He knows what he’s doing, that’s for sure! Meme list here.

Tit invasion
First some intro: In our garden, there is a tall larch and it’s branches are very close to my window. This tree is favorite feeding place of various kinds of tits and I watch them whenever they come and hop on the branches. It’s not the best place for taking photos, because it’s usally backlit… and usually I just watch the birds and forget I could actually took some...

Day 12 - A book you used to love but don’t anymore Lol, this is gonna be embarassing. Light of the Western Stars by Zane Grey. I have read this book several times several years ago, four, five, I think. I loved it, even though I was aware it was bellow my usual standards. I’ve reread it again last year and… *snicker* The most delicious wallbanger of them all: “Why, Stewart,...

Day 11 - A book you hated We’ll have double today: 1. Augustine of Hippo - Confessions. One of the first books I had to read at college, luckily just three chapters. Unluckily, it’s the part where he explains his idea of free will. it doesn’t make much sense even when explained by a scholar, and it’s hopeless when read on your own. Ugh. Bad memories. 2. Sara Douglas -...

Day 10 - Favorite classic book What is a classic book? Victor Hugo is classic, Tolkien is classic, Plato is classic… But oh well. Persuasion by Jane Austen. I don’t like reading romances, especially the older ones since the heroines just make me squirm, but Persuasion was a very pleasant reading and the characters were much more relatable then I thought they could be. And of course,...

(I messed up the numbers agaaaain :[ am I really that absent-minded?) Day 08 - Most overrated book ATTENTION! Subjective opinion ahead! Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling. I have read two books (Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix) and seen the first two movies, but the rest would have to be several degrees better to change my opinion. There isn’t anything special in the series. It hit...

Day 09 - A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving Candide by Voltaire. We learned about the book in school and I was sure it’s going to be “rambling and incomprehensible”. Instead, it’s witty and snarky and even though I know it’s basically a criticism of another philosophical movement and thus srs-bsns, it doesn’t feel heavy-handed at all. ...

Snow
In the best Christmas spirit it has been snowing for several days here in CR. As usual on the first big snowfall in winter the roads weren’t cleared in time and the trains and buses were delayed. Everybody was complaining of course - but I feel most of them were secretly excited. (That’s the problem with Czechs - we like to point out mistakes. Usually we don’t mean much by it,...

Day 07 - Most underrated book Otherland by Ted Williams. Well, it’s technically a series, but whatever. It’s a complex, intriguing sci-fi centering about a virtual reality network. It has enormous cast, but every single one of them is unique. Most of them are badass, but in a real, humane way. I actually think Willliams can use the motive of VR better than William Gibson. Gibson is...

Day 06 - A book that makes you sad The planet between two suns by Robert Fabian. It’s an army sci-fi from czech author, it wasn’t translated to english. Which is a shame because he is a good writer, and I mean really good. The book is a sci-fi/horror mix, a spaceship crashes on a planet and the survivors start to die… but the thing is, it’s a total downer ending....
